My latest article for Apex Magazine (check it out here) is about, as an artist who likes being noticed, learning how to approach people. It’s not easy, and being a wallflower most of life it really becomes a challenge.
As the article I wrote discusses, putting that first step out can be difficult, but can be very rewarding. Case in point, on a whim I decided to ask about the art on the walls at the local art store (Jerry’s Artarama in Fort Collins, Colorado). My brain kept saying things like, “don’t ask about art”. But I did anyway.
I simply put out that first step, and asked who does the art on the walls and who I might talk to about it. The cashier referred me to the woman behind them, who then told me everything I needed to know.
Today, she and I put up a number of my art pieces in the store, in quite prominent positions.
That’s something that wouldn’t have happened without that first step, without putting out myself for a chance at something good. True, it doesn’t always work. But in this case it worked out great, as many artists and customers can now see my work.
It’s a great feeling, and the staff at Artarama has been great to work with. I shop there myself, and have for many years, and that personal sense you get from a shop like that is great.
Here’s where the art is in the store, if you can get a chance to visit (here’s their website):
Ok, just kidding. I’m not necessarily THAT obnoxious. Here are the actual pics, and really they are in some great spots.
